At the Heart of MARUG: A Year as Secretary

What does it really mean to be Secretary of MARUG? To give you a better idea, we spoke with Wouter Siezen, the current Secretary of MARUG. In this interview, he shares what his role looks like behind the scenes, how he fits within the board, and what this year has taught him.

A Role That Connects Everything

As Secretary, Wouter holds one of the most central positions within the board. While the title may sound administrative, the reality is much broader. He is responsible for MARUG’s external communication, member administration, the website, newsletters, and the alumni network. In practice, that means he is involved in almost everything that is written, sent, updated, or registered.

He keeps an overview of ongoing events, ensures that communication aligns across different platforms, and supports other board members where necessary. “I expected it to be just the tasks themselves,” he says, “but it’s much more about helping everyone else with whatever they need.”

The Secretary is not just managing information. He is connecting people, projects, and processes.

What Does a Typical Week Look Like?

Although no week is identical, there is a clear rhythm. Each Monday starts with a board meeting where planning, responsibilities, and progress are discussed. From there, the week fills up quickly with tasks that range from answering emails to updating event pages and processing new memberships.

A large part of his time is spent on communication. The Secretary mailbox and general inbox receive questions from members, companies, and partners daily. Some emails are forwarded internally, others require careful drafting and follow-up. He enjoys refining tone and structure, making sure communication is professional yet approachable. He even writes the internal board updates for the broader network. “Yes,” he laughs, “I’m the gossip girl.”

A Central Position Within the Board

The Secretary role naturally places Wouter at the center of the team. Because communication touches every portfolio, he works closely with almost all board members. He aligns website texts with marketing campaigns, coordinates membership information with the treasurer, and ensures that event communication is clear and timely.

“I need to know what’s going on everywhere,” he explains. That overview shapes his position within the board. It requires awareness, flexibility, and strong collaboration skills.

What makes working on this board special, according to him: “In your studies, you work in groups for a few months. Here, you work intensively together for an entire year.” That extended collaboration creates deeper trust and a stronger understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

Highlights and Challenges

One of the highlights of his year was organizing the International Inhouse Tour to London. Securing company visits proved challenging, especially in a competitive environment. But seeing the trip come together made the effort worthwhile. Another proud moment was personally securing a well-known speaker for a major marketing event. Reaching out independently and seeing the collaboration succeed gave him a strong sense of accomplishment.

Of course, a board year also brings challenges. Balancing responsibilities, staying proactive, and continuously improving processes requires discipline. It has also influenced his time management.

Why Become Secretary?

His motivation to apply stemmed from a desire to stand out and gain practical experience. In a large study program where hundreds of students graduate each year, a board year offers something extra. “You’re one of many,” he says honestly. “A board year makes you different.”

Beyond strengthening his CV, the role offered the opportunity to grow, take ownership, and build long-term connections.

A Role with Lasting Impact

The position of Secretary at MARUG is structured yet dynamic, precise yet creative, demanding yet rewarding. For Wouter, it became more than just a function, it was a year of growth and confidence.

For students considering applying: if you enjoy working with detail, communicating professionally, and being at the center of an organization, the role of Secretary is an opportunity to shape the foundation on which everything else runs.
