Beyond Boundaries: A Journey Through Time with MARUG

MARUG began with people who wanted more.

More from their student life.
More connections.
More insights.
More experiences beyond the lecture halls.

They chose to look beyond the limits in front of them. To step outside the boundaries. The 19th lustrum of MARUG is therefore fully centered around Beyond Boundaries. In the run-up to this special milestone, we take you back in time.

Where it all began

Who were the first to take on this challenge?
Who took the initiative to connect, inspire, and create?

In 1981, Peter Leeflang laid the foundation for what MARUG is today. As a professor of Marketing, he recognized the power of connecting theory with practice by linking students to the real world. He looked beyond the boundaries of the classroom and that is exactly where the story of MARUG began.

Over the years, many individuals have continued this vision. Not only professors, but especially students and inspiring honorary members have helped MARUG grow into what it is today. What started small quickly developed into an environment where ambition, curiosity, and initiative came together. What defines MARUG is not only what it organizes, but also the people behind it. They continuously build, improve, and pass on their knowledge to the next generation.

Lustrum IX

Every five years, MARUG takes a moment to reflect on its journey. But lustrums are more than just celebrations of the past.

They are moments where generations come together. Where alumni look back and current members look ahead. Where memories and ambitions meet. During these milestones, boundaries begin to fade. Between past and present, between student and professional, and between memory and future.

And perhaps that is what MARUG has always been about.

Forward

So the core idea remains the same as in 1981: bringing people together and encouraging them to explore new opportunities.

This shows that Beyond Boundaries is not a new concept. It has been part of MARUG’s DNA from the very beginning. 45 years of highlights speak for themselves, ranging from conference days and in-house tours to career events, countless socials, and international experiences in cities such as Istanbul, Barcelona, Dublin, and London.

That is definitely something worth celebrating, isn’t it?

This lustrum is not just about looking back. It is about setting the tone for what comes next. New members bring fresh ideas, new initiatives create new opportunities and each generation continues to redefine what MARUG can be. So while we celebrate the past, we also look forward.

The story does not end here.
Beyond Boundaries continues with you.
